In occasione del progetto di residenza per giovani artisti internazionali SARP – Sicily Artist Residence Program, di cui siamo media partner, conosciamo da vicino i 3 artisti a lavoro in questi giorni a Linguaglossa (Ct) presso Palazzo Previtera.

Procediamo con Adrian Schachter proveniente dalla School of Visual Arts di New York City.

Chi è Adrian Schachter? Puoi dirci qualcosa sulla tua formazione e la tua ricerca artistica?

Chiedi alla persona sbagliata! Sono cresciuto a Londra per poi trasferirmi a New York quattro anni fa dove ho conseguito il diploma in Arte. La mia ricerca artistica gira attorno ad internet e i suoi strumenti principali per estrarre informazioni. Questo include qualsiasi cosa dalle ultime vicende ai generatori di storie.

 

Who is Adrian Schachter? Can you tell us more about your education and your artistic research?

You’re asking the wrong person! I grew up in London and moved to NYC four years ago where I am finishing a BFA undergraduate degree. My artistic research is based around the internet and it is my main instrument for extracting information. This includes anything from current affairs to random story generators.

 

Quando hai capito che l’arte poteva diventare il tuo l’acoro? I tuoi amici e la tua famiglia ti hanno incoraggiato a farlo?

Sono abbastanza fortunato da poter dire che i miei genitori sono coinvolti nel mondo dell’arte e hanno nutrito i miei interessi fino a trasformali in una grande e avvolgente passione da che io abbia memoria. Da piccolo, mia madre, artista, mi ha incoraggiato a disegnare sempre. Mio padre è uno scrittore/critico/mercante d’arte e mi ha iniziato alla conoscenza su questo mondo che io cerco costantemente di espandere e coltivare. Entrando in una galleria o in un museo tutti insieme, se non riuscissi a riconoscere il lavoro di un artista in mostra mi ritroverei in un grosso guaio!

 

When did you find that art could be your career? Did your friends and family encourage you?

I am lucky enough to say that my parents are involved in art and fostered my interest into a full blown passion ever since I can remember. As a child, my mother, an artist, facilitated my need to never not be drawing. My father is a dealer/writer/artist and initiated my art historical awareness which I am constantly trying to expand and nurture. We would walk into a gallery or museum and if I couldn’t recognise the work of the artist on display I was in big trouble!

 

 

Quali sono i tuoi riferimenti artistici principali? Qual è il tuo messaggio?

Nonostante i miei riferimenti sembrino cambiare frequentemente, l’ombrello principale sotto cui mi riparo è la mutua interazione tra fatti e finzioni. Durante la crescita mi sono trincerato in un mondo di favole e cartoni che cerco sempre di traslare sulla verità della vita quotidiana. Questo potrebbe includere casi di rarità mediche, curiosità naturali o alcuni nuovi eventi bizzarri. Sono totalmente rapito dall’idea che il nostro mondo contenga abbastanza meraviglie da rendere la finzione completamente superflua.

 

Which are your main artistic references? What is your message?

Although my references seem to shift frequently, the main umbrella under which I dwell is the interplay between fact and fiction. Growing up I was extremely entrenched within the world of fairytale and cartoons, and I am always trying to apply this to the truths of daily life. This may include medical rarities; natural curiosities; bizarre news events. I am utterly enthralled by the idea that our world contains enough wonder to render fiction totally redundant.

 

 

I tuoi quadri “esplorano l’artificialità degli oggetti di plastica, impregnati di pittura da sembrare sculture” (Samira Larouci). Come mai questa scelta tecnica così materica?

Sono stato sempre incantato dalla plastica e i materiali che provengono dall’artificiale. Lo trovò un paradosso singolare; fondamentalmente, tutto quello che conosciamo viene dal mondo naturale e questa forma di falsità, come tutto, ha un fondo di verità. Ritengo che usare questa brodaglia industriale di materiale in modo organico possa adeguarsi a questa ricerca.

 

Your canvas “tap in to the artificiality of plastic-based mediums, sculptured-like” (Samira Larouci, Vogue Art). How come this materic technical choice?

I have always been enchanted by plastic and media that comes from the ‘artificial’. I find it a peculiar paradox: fundamentally, everything we know comes from the natural world and this form of falseness, as everything else, is based in truth. I find that using all these factory-produced glops of media in an organic way speaks to this notion.

 

 

Giungi alla prima edizione del Sarp. Cosa ti ha portato a partecipare a questa esperienza? Pensi che le scene artistiche italiana e americana abbiano degli aspetti in comune?

Sono stato messo in contatto con Alfio da un amico in comune e ho trovato il progetto estremamente stimolante. Sfortunatamente non sono abbastanza informato sullo scenario artistico italiano per ora, probabilmente dopo questa esperienza posso imparare di più! Per come vanno le questioni relative alla scena americana, da quello che ho notato sembra molto incoraggiante e vivace, di conseguenza anche altamente competitiva.

 

You are at the first SARP edition. What led you to participate in this experience? Do you think that the italian and american art scene have aspects in common?

I was put in touch with Alfio by a mutual friend and found the project incredibly exciting. Unfortunately I am not too aware of the Italian art scene as of yet, maybe after this experience i can learn more about it! As far as the American art scene goes, from what I have noticed it seems very encouraging and vibrant, and consequentially it is highly competetive.

 

 

Durante il periodo di residenza sono previsti diversi workshop tra cui quello di pittura tenuto dall’artista israeliana Ophrah Shemesh. Quale tipo di apporto potrebbe darti questo confronto?

È una grande opportunità sperimentare con nuovi materiali e conoscere diversi punti di vista. Sono da sempre entusiasta di imparare, specialmente con qualcuno così esperto come Ophrah.

 

It’s provided a series of workshops during this residence period. The painting one will be conducted by the American-Israeli artist Ophra Shemesh. What type of contribution could give you this exchange of views?

It’s a great opportunity to experiment with new media and learn different perspectives. I am always keen to learn, especially with somebody as knoweledgeable as Ophrah.

 

 

Puoi darci qualche anticipazione sul lavoro in residenza in vista della mostra conclusiva del prossimo 9 agosto? Come elaborerai il progetto?

Questa è la mia prima residenza e avrò la mente aperta a tutto quello che l’esperienza lì recherà; sono emozionato si conoscere gli altri residenti e lasciare che questa mentalità aperta porti la mia arte in direzioni inaspettate.

 

Can you give us some anticipations about your work in residence in view of the final exhibition on 9th of August? How will you develop your project?

This is my first residency, and I´m bearing a very open mind to what will come of my time there; I’m excited to meet the other residents and let this open mindset take the art I produce there in unexpected directions.
