Incontro Chris Bailkoski la prima volta nello spazio Longsight Art Space inaugurato il 13 Aprile 2022 da lui e Chi Emecheta. Bailkoski e Emecheta sono anche curatorɜ del progetto PROFORMA, una piattaforma senza una sede fissa che in maniera trasversale e interdisciplinare si propone di sostenere il lavoro di artistɜ dell’area di Greater Manchester e internazionalɜ, grazie a una rete che si espande dall’Italia alla Germania e che presto si aprirà alla Lituania.
PROFORMA nasce nel con l’intento di supportare lɜ artistɜ di Manchester e dintorni, attraverso esposizioni e residenze, con un interesse speciale rivolto verso le arti performative e digital art. Bailkoski dice di intuire un potenziale performativo in ogni forma di produzione artistica. È su queste fondamenta che si definisce PROFORMA, una piattaforma che vede coinvoltɜ tanto performer quanto digital artists, ma anche musicistɜ e artistɜ visivɜ. La dimensione internazionale di questa piattaforma si delinea attraverso collaborazioni con realtà come Pase Platform, con base a Venezia, e Begehungen a Chemnitz, Germania.
Il 2022 ha visto per la seconda volta consecutiva PROFORMA in un evento collaterale alla Biennale di Venezia, sostenuta da Pase, Venture Arts and Begehungen festival . I lavori di 28 artistɜ è stato presentato durante un’esposizione-evento di un giorno il 22 Aprile 2022 che ha visto susseguirsi diverse performances e proiezioni.
Sebbene interconnessi su molti livelli, PROFORMA e Longsight Art Space sono, mi dice Bailkoski, progetti separati. Il neonato spazio a Longsight si propone come un luogo destinato all’arte e la creatività su vari livelli. Non si limita ad essere spazio espositivo, ma anzi vuole essere soprattutto spazio di aggregazione e produzione artistica. Con questo in mente, lɜ fondatorɜ e curatorɜ, propongono un ricco programma che vede tanto esposizioni che workshops ed iniziative destinate alla comunità che abita l’area di Longsight.
Fondamentale per comprendere la natura del progetto è sapere che lɜ art directors sono interessatɜ a destinare dal 25 al 50% del programma espositivo annuale ad artistɜ con base a Longsight. Entrambɜ sono impegnatɜ, infatti, a inserirsi nel contesto in cui lo spazio nasce considerandone equilibri e dinamiche, e cercando di diventare un polo dove culture, lingue e produzione artistica si incontrano in maniera eterogena diventando uno spazio di scambio e fermento artistico.
Longsight Art Space diventerà sede per residenze artistiche internazionali che avranno sia una forma fisica che digitale e permetteranno allɜ artistɜ coinvoltɜ di avere uno scambio con realtà esterne. Il programma prevede un periodo destinato allo sviluppo di un progetto artistico e la successiva restituzione di questo, sottoforma di un’esposizione a Longsight e nello spazio fisico della realtà internazionale gemellata. È qui che PROFORMA e Longsight Art Space si incontrano, difatti i partner internazionali con cui lavora la piattaforma saranno gli stessi coinvolti anche nel programma di residenze artistiche.
Così, ponendo il focus sul concetto di ecologia più che economia, questi due progetti paralleli, si inseriscono nella scena artistica di Manchester e non solo. L’obiettivo è creare reti che vivano di rapporti basati su collaborazione e supporto reciproco, nonché rispetto e valorizzazione delle comunità in cui ci si inserisce e con cui si lavora. Per questo, sebbene entrambi i progetti abbiano già una struttura solida, sembrano essere disposti a ridefinirsi ascoltando e prendendo in considerazione le necessità della comunità artistica e non, più che le necessità imposte dal mercato.

Between art-ecosystems
and intercultural melting pot
with PROFORMA and Longsight Art Space

I meet Chris Bailkoski for the first time in the Longsight Art Space opened on 13 April 2022 by him and Chi Emecheta. Bailkoski and Emecheta are also curators of the PROFORMA project, a platform without a fixed location that in a transversal and interdisciplinary way aims to support the work of artists from Greater Manchester and internationally, thanks to a network that expands from Italy to Germany and will soon open up to Lithuania.
PROFORMA was founded with the intention of supporting artists from Manchester and the surrounding area, through exhibitions and residencies, with a special interest in performance and digital art. In Bailkoski’s opinion, performative potential can be recognised in every form of artistic production. On this basis, PROFORMA defines itself as a platform involving performers as well as digital artists, but also musicians and visual artists. The international dimension of this platform is outlined through collaborations with realities such as Pase Platform, based in Venice, and Begehungen in Chemnitz, Germany.
The year 2022 saw PROFORMA’s participation in a Venice Biennale’s collateral event for the second consecutive time, in collaboration with Pase, Venture Arts and Begehungen festival. The work of 28 artists was presented during a one-day show on the 22nd of April 2022 that featured several performances and film screenings.
Although interconnected on many levels, PROFORMA and Longsight Art Space are, as Bailkoski points out, separate projects. The new-born space in Longsight aims to be a place for art and creativity on many levels. It is not limited to being an exhibition space, but rather aims above all to be a space for gathering and artistic production. With this in mind, the director and co-director propose a rich programme of exhibitions, workshops and initiatives for the community that inhabits the Longsight area.
Fundamental to understanding the nature of the project is knowing that both the art directors are interested in allocating 25 to 50 per cent of the annual exhibition programme to Longsight-based artists. Both are committed to fitting into the context in which the space was created, considering the area balance and dynamics, and seeking to become a hub where cultures, languages and artistic production meet in a heterogeneous way, becoming a space of artistic exchange and cultural melting pot.
Longsight Art Space will become a venue for international artistic residencies that will have both a physical and digital form and will allow the artists involved to have an exchange with an international reality. The programme includes a period for the development of an artistic project and the subsequent return of this in the form of an exhibition at the Longsight venture and in the physical space of the twinned international reality. This is where PROFORMA and Longsight Art Space meet, as the international partners with whom the platform works will also be the same as those involved in the art residency programme.
Thus, by focusing on the concept of ecology rather than economy, these two parallel projects fit into the Manchester art scene and expand beyond. Their aim is to create networks that thrive on relationships based on collaboration and mutual support, as well as respect and appreciation of the communities in which they fit in and with which they work. Therefore, although both projects already have a solid structure, they seem to be willing to redefine themselves by listening to and taking into account the needs of the artistic and non-artistic community rather than the needs imposed by the market.
